Event - Livestock genetics and forage-based systems for a profitable greener future

RamCompare farmer, Alwyn Nutting, and Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) invite you to join them for this farm event which will showcase progress of the RamCompare project and introduce AFN+ Breeding Better and LUNZ grassland, two new research projects.

Alwyn joined RamCompare as a host farm in 2021, using performance recorded terminal sire rams on his composite maternal ewes and recording the commercial progeny data from birth to slaughter. Sam Boon, Signet Manager for AHDB, joins us to explain how farms can use performance recorded figures in their sire selection to ensure profit from commercial lamb enterprises through benefits such as increased lamb carcase weight and reduced finish time, maximising efficient use of grassland.

The AFN+ Breeding Better project will feature the benefits of improved breeding strategies for commercial sheep flocks and beef herds using superior livestock genetics and breeding management.

The LUNZ Grassland project seeks to develop and provide evidence of the sustainability of grassland based systems to underpin promotion of the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) Welsh Beef and Welsh lamb brands.  An overall assessment of sustainability will be discussed to acknowledge the many benefits of red meat production in Wales including  profitability, carbon calculations, biodiversity and social values.

In Wales HCC is working with 15 commercial farmers, including Alwyn Nutting, across these two projects. Heather McCalman of HCC will be joined by project partners to outline their progress.

Please save the date - more information and details on how to book for this event will follow.
